I did a bit of reading online and found out that Odin’s ravens were called Hugin and Mugin; Thought and Memory. They were his eyes and ears – flying all over the world and returning to tell him all they had seen. I really liked this idea and I found a verse about them on Wikipedia which I wanted to use…thus the text.
Old Norse:
- Huginn ok Muninn fliúga hverian dag
- iörmungrund yfir;
- óomk ek of Huginn, at hann aptr ne komit,
- þó siámk meirr um Muninn.
English:
- The whole world wide, every day,
- fly Hugin and Munin;
- I worry lest Hugin should fall in flight,
- yet more I fear for Munin.
The ATCs are made from playing cards. I painted them with acrylic paint. I wanted to get the colours of the ravens wings; black with a blue tinge …2 coats. Then I decided to try and get an antiqued crackle finish with silver showing through. So another 4 coats went on – silver, black and blue then the crackle medium. In hindsight the silver would be the base coat with a sealer over then the black and blue with the crackle medium over the top…having said this it probably wouldn’t be much thinner!
The smaller collaged text are words and phrases I found that resonated with me when I think of our Rookery.
I wanted an image to tie everything together and found a nice flying raven that echoed the idea of Odin’s Hugin and Mugin flying across the world. She is hand-cut from vellum and highlighted with colour pencils, purple and blue.
The cards are all slightly different – due to the way I cut the poem and the found words I used. I covered the back of the card with black paper to tie it all up.
I will post the rest as I finish them!

This is wonderful, the layering works very well and the thoughtfulness behind the card is intriguing- but I don’t see who’s card it is?
Gosh this is wonderful and what a great idea for a series!
Chefleur–I’ve pulled the wrong image out–now you can post yours so we can all enjoy it! The idea is wonderful, can’t wait to see the card.
